An eating disorder is a very hard thing to deal with and lots of people have misconceptions of them! One thing that came along with my eating disorder was depression.
Some people don’t understand why an eating disorder would make you depressed, but they don’t see the person you see when you look in the mirror. Here are the top 5 things no one understands about an eating disorder…
1) You can’t just make yourself stop whatever eating disorder it is! For example, I have Binge Eating Disorder, and people always say well if you don’t want to eat that then don’t eat it. They don’t understand what it’s like to have compulsions for food.
2) An eating disorder will stay with you until you get professional help. The eating disorder isn’t just going to magically disappear on it’s own. I wish they would because I would have a lot less stress.
3) Telling someone with an eating disorder to not worry about what others think doesn’t help. Ultimately, at least for me, the biggest struggle I have is body image and wanting to be accepted by others.
4)When you lose weight no amount is ever good enough because you feel like you have to do better. You could lose 10lbs in 3 weeks, but your brain tells you it’s not good enough and you should have lost 15lbs.
5) Even If you get past the eating disorder you will have triggers that will try to push you back to that dark place in your life. My therapist has told me to find my triggers and try to avoid them. A main trigger with an eating disorder is weighing yourself.
These are the 5 things no one understands about an eating disorder! If you have any others let me know. Have a great day/night!
